Various defects occur during the production of fused zirconia corundum bricks, resulting in poor quality of the finished products. The physical and chemical inhomogeneity of zirconia corundum bricks is often the main cause of defects in the products. Unmelted particles in the batch and gas inclusions that have not been expelled from the melt belong to physical inhomogeneity. Differences in melt composition along the depth of the furnace belong to chemical inhomogeneity. The defect types and their causes in the production of fused zirconia corundum bricks are listed in the figure below.
